Most atoms consist of almost equal mass of protons and neutrons.  'Free' neutrons as beams of particles can be used to study materials in several different ways - they can be tailored to look deep inside objects or to study surfaces.  Information is obtained for samples on length scales from millimetres to atomic size.  I will talk about how we obtain and use these beams.  A large new neutron facility, the European Spallation Source, for this type of work is under construction in Lund.  Two examples will illustrate results: seeds from Moringa oleifera trees can be used for a sustainable water purification process.  Neutrons have told us how proteins from these seeds bind to impurities and cause them to aggregate.  A second example shows how details of Vendel period swords from burial sites in Valsgärde, north of Uppsala, are revealed with three-dimensional imaging.

In addition to this talk, we will have Zhenya Kim as a guest. She works as a medic in Ukraine with OperationAid and will report on the problems that drones pose for medics in the field.
